I did an "Iron Butt" ride on Saturday. I rode 1002 miles from Ironwood, MI, to Columbus, MT. I took me about 17.5 hours, got caught in the rain twice, finishing in the rain, I had planned on staying in Red Lodge, MT, but when I got off the exit, i callled one of the motels and was told that their were no roooms available in the town. Columbus was just far enough down I-90 to complete my miles for the ride, so off I when in the rain.
On Sunday I headed toward Yellowstone. The ride up to Red Lodge from Columbus was nice, except for about 6 miles of muddy road construction. Had a moose cross in front of me, this would be the only moose sighting of the trip.
After breakfast in Red Lodge, I rode the Beartooth, and Chief Joseph Hwy's over to Cody. Then headed into Yellowstone. Found a campsite and set camp. Then when exploring the park. Very crowded, lot's of Harleys, everyones headed to Sturgis. Finally made it to the rack about 10:30 pm.
This was my first night sleeping in the hammock. This beats a tent any day of the week.
Monday found me going through Grand Teton National Park, and Jackson Hole, WY. I made it to the Mustang Ridge CG that evening. A good hot shower, and diner. Sat up looking at stars for a good while. Wow, you just can't see them this well back home.It was such a clear night, the sky was amazing.
Today I have been making my way to Rocky Mountain National Park. Planned on camping there tonight; however, I stopped in Granby, CO just shy of the park. I was riding between two storm fronts, so i decided to put on the rain gear. while I was stopped a small tornado touched down within sight of the convenience store. That cell was close on my heels and moving toward the park, so I thought it best to get room for tonight, and try again tomorrow.
I'm posting pics to Facebook, this blog just takes too long.
